Lincoln Town Car Idler Arm Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and remove/install the Center Link,Idler Arm,Pitman Arm and Tie Rod for the Lincoln Town Car?
A: The steering linkage connects the steering gear to the wheels via the Pitman arm, idler arm, center link, and adjustable tie-rods. Check the idler arm for looseness by raising the vehicle's front and moving it up and down. Look for damaged components. For tie-rod removal, loosen the castle nut, detach the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, and remove the nut. Replace the tie-rod end if needed and unscrew it. Detach the inner tie-rod end from the center link, lubricate the new tie-rod end, and screw it into the adjuster sleeve. Connect it to the steering knuckle, tighten the nut, and install a new cotter pin. Reconnect the tie-rod to the center link, tighten the clamp nuts, and reinstall the wheel. To replace the idler arm, remove it from the center link, detach the idler arm-to-frame bolts, and install a new assembly, tightening bolts. Insert the idler arm into the center link, tighten, and install a new nut.
