Be cautious with the corrosive sulfuric acid in the electrolyte, preventing contact with eyes, skin, or clothing, and never ingest it. Wear protective safety glasses when working near the battery and keep children away from it. Inspect the battery's external condition, checking for any damage or corrosion around the terminals, loose connections, cracks in the case or cover, or loose hold-down clamps, as well as examining the cables for cracks and frayed conductors. If corrosion is present, especially around the terminals, the battery should be removed for cleaning. Thoroughly clean the cable clamps, terminals, and battery top with a solution of warm water and baking soda, wearing safety goggles and rubber gloves to protect against contact with the solution. Ensure the battery tray and hold-down clamp fasteners are in good condition without over-tightening them. Additionally, corrosion on hold-down components and surrounding areas can be eliminated with a baking soda solution and should be followed by a rinse with plain water. Any metal parts damaged by corrosion should be coated with a zinc-based primer and painted. When it comes to charging the battery, a one or two-amp trickle charger is recommended for slow-rate charging to restore a discharged battery or maintain its charge, especially in winter. Avoid using a charger rated for more than 1/10th the amp/hour rating of the battery, and rapid boost charges should only be used in emergencies, as they can be harsh on the battery and may damage it. Charging times are typically provided in the charger's instructions, with a trickle charger taking 12 to 16 hours on average to charge a battery.

Remove the battery hold down clamp and carefully lift out the heavy battery.

To disconnect the battery, loosen the cable end bolt and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. It is important to isolate the cable end to prevent accidental contact with the battery terminal.

Before servicing the battery, always ensure the engine and accessories are turned off and disconnect the negative battery cable.
