The ignition coil pack is bolted to the left-hand end of the cylinder head; on 2.0L SPI engines, the coil is mounted with the secondary towers pointing to the left fender, while on 2.0L Zetec-E and Duratec Engines, the towers point straight up. On Duratec engines, the coil has a cover that must be removed to access the coils. On 2.3L and2005 and later 2.0L engines, the individual coils are bolted to the valve cover over each spark plug. Make sure the ignition is switched off, then disconnect the wiring plug from the coil. On 2.3L and 2005 and later 2.0L Engines, disconnect the electrical connector at each coil, remove the mounting bolt and pull straight up to remove the coil from the spark plug. Check the coil terminals to see whether they are marked for cylinder numbering - if not, make your own marks to ensure that the sparkplug wires are correctly installed. Identify the spark plug wires for position if necessary, then carefully pull them from the coil terminals. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the ignition coil from the engine compartment. To remove the coil pack with its mounting bracket, disconnect the radio suppression connector, remove the screws and remove the coil-pack with its bracket attached. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistances of the ignition coil primary and secondary windings and compare with the information given in the Specifications. Replace the coil if necessary. Installation is a reversal of removal. Take great care that the spark plug wires are correctly installed, and tighten the coil mounting bolts to the specified torque.
