Fuel filters in carbureted models should be replaced according to the maintenance interval suggestions and when a blockage in the fuel line occurs due to excessive foreign material in the fuel.

Remove the filter-to-fuel line retainer clips if equipped. Then, remove the fuel lines from the filter.

Initially remove the carburetor air cleaner. Loosen the fuel line clips at the filter, pull off the fuel lines and discard the clips. On later models, unscrew the filter from the carburetor as shown. Fit the replacement filter using new clips, start the engine and check for fuel leaks. If the replacement filter shows the direction of fuel flow, take care that it is installed in the correct direction. Install the air cleaner.

To replace a carburetor inlet fuel filter, first, detach the line leading to the inlet. Carefully unscrew the carburetor inlet filter unit from the carburetor. To reinstall, thread a new filter into the carburetor and tighten it securely.

For screw-in type carburetor filters, remove clamps, hose, and filter, then hand-start the new filter and fully tighten. Cut a new fuel hose, position spring clamps, and attach to the filter and steel fuel supply line.

Before replacing the fuel filter on fuel-injected models, you should inspect the hose fittings for cleanliness and relieve the fuel system pressure.

The fuel filter is located on the inside of the left-side frame rail.

Remove the hairpin clips from each fitting before detaching the fuel hoses from the filter.

On models with the filter mounted on the outside of the carburetor, you'll need to loosen the screw clamp, disconnect the rubber hose, unscrew the fitting, and detach the filter.

Carefully push each hose onto the filter until it's seated against the collar on the fitting, then install the hairpin clips. Make sure the clips are securely attached to the hose fittings to prevent potential fuel leaks and fire hazards.

The fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the inside of either the left or right frame rail, near the fuel tank.

Fuel filters are typically the paper replacement type and can be found either screwing into the carburetor fuel inlet or located in the fuel line. For this task, ensure the engine is cold, having sat for at least 3 hours. Collect the necessary tools, including the appropriate replacement filter, wrenches for flare nut fittings on carburetor-mounted filters, or a screwdriver and pliers for in-line types. Have clean rags ready to catch any spilled fuel. Begin by removing the air cleaner assembly, noting the positions of vacuum hoses if disconnected. Follow the fuel hose from the fuel pump to locate the filter. For carburetor-mounted filters, use a wrench to hold the nut, loosen the fitting, and disconnect the fuel line. Move the line for better access, unscrew the fuel inlet filter nut, and replace the filter, gasket, and spring. Hand-tighten the fuel inlet fitting into the carburetor, then fully tighten using two wrenches. For screw-in type carburetor filters, remove clamps, hose, and filter, then hand-start the new filter and fully tighten. Cut a new fuel hose, position spring clamps, and attach to the filter and steel fuel supply line. For in-line filters, remove clamps and hoses, cut new hoses, install clamps, and attach to the filter, metal supply line, and carburetor inlet fitting. After installation, run the engine, check for leaks, and reinstall the air cleaner assembly, reconnecting hoses to their original positions.
