The fuel filter is located on the inside of the left-side frame rail.

To remove this type of filter, unscrew the canister from the bottom of the fuel pump. Slowly lower the canister and filter assembly off the bottom of the fuel pump. Empty the fuel into an approved gasoline container, then remove the filter and gasket assembly. Insert a new filter and gasket assembly. Screw the filter and filter housing assembly back onto the base of the fuel pump. Start the vehicle and check the filter and surrounding area for leaks.

Fuel filters are typically the paper replacement type and can be found either screwing into the carburetor fuel inlet or located in the fuel line.

Install the fuel filter mounting bracket on the engine. Install the priming pump assembly on the bracket. Install the fuel filter lines and clamps.

Remove the filter-to-fuel line retainer clips if equipped. Then, remove the fuel lines from the filter.

On models with the filter mounted on the outside of the carburetor, you'll need to loosen the screw clamp, disconnect the rubber hose, unscrew the fitting, and detach the filter.

If an internal filter is located inside the carburetor inlet, the spring, gasket, and filter must be removed. Assemble the new filter, seal, and spring in the reverse order of their removal.

For fuel-injected models, start by obtaining a new fuel filter and locating the existing filter on the frame rail near the fuel tank. Ensure the hose fittings are clean, remove the hairpin clips from each fitting, and detach the fuel hoses from the filter. Take note of the arrow's direction on the old filter before loosening the clamp or bolts and removing it from the bracket. Install the new filter in the same orientation, secure it, and reconnect the hoses with hairpin clips. Double-check that the clips are securely attached, then start the engine and inspect for any fuel leaks. In the case of carbureted models, remove the air cleaner housing to access the filter. Place a rag underneath and disconnect the fuel line(s) from the filter, either by sliding clamps on hose connections or unscrewing inverted flare connections. If you have an inline filter, replace it with a new one and secure it with clamps, replacing any spring-type clamps. For carburetor-mounted filters, remove the old filter or fuel inlet fitting, apply thread sealant if necessary, and screw in the new filter tightly. If dealing with a flare-nut fuel line connection, apply motor oil to the threads, connect the line to the filter, and secure it. Finally, reinstall the air cleaner housing, completing the replacement procedure.

Remove the bolts and detach the filter and bracket assembly. On 1988 through 1994 models, note which way the arrow is pointing - the new filter must be installed the same way.

Place a rag under the filter, unscrew the line while holding the filter hex with a back-up wrench, and use a flare-nut wrench if available to prevent rounding off the fuel line fitting hex.
