Q:
How to replace a heater core in a Ford Fairmont? Posted by Customer
A:
Loosen the radiator cap, open the radiator drain cock and partially drain the cooling system which will also drain the heater core. Disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses where they enter the back of the core. Plug the heater core tubes to prevent spillage when the core is removed inside the vehicle. Remove the glove box inner liner to give access to the heater core cover. Note: Some vehicles may not have a removable cover for access to the heater core. To replace the core on such vehicles, the entire heater case must be removed and disassembled. Remove the instrument panel cowl brace. Move the temperature control lever to the Warm position. Through the glove box opening, remove the 4 screws retaining the heater core cover and remove the cover. Loosen the 3 heater case mounting studs from the engine compartment side. Push the heater core tubes and seal toward the inside of the vehicle to separate the core assembly from the heater case. Withdraw the heater core assembly through the glove box and remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system and check the heater for proper operation.

Q:
How to remove and replace the heater core in Lincoln Mark VII? Posted by Customer
A:
The following procedures involve the removal of several interior trim parts. In the case of 1981 and later Town Car models, the entire instrument panel must be removed or pulled back to access the heater assembly. To begin, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system, then disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet tubes, and plug the heater core tubes to prevent coolant spillage. Remove the nuts holding the left end of the plenum to the firewall and the nut holding the upper left side corner of the evaporator case to the firewall. Disconnect the vacuum supply hoses from the vacuum source and push the grommet and vacuum supply hose into the passenger compartment. Proceed to remove various instrument panel trim components, steering column covers, cowl trim panels, defroster grille, and cross body brace to gain access to the heater core. Disconnect the wiring harness, vacuum hoses, and other components connected to the plenum assembly. Carefully move the plenum to allow clearance for the heater core tubes and the stud at the top of the plenum, and remove the plenum by rotating it from behind the instrument panel. To replace the heater core, follow the reverse procedure of removal. For 1982 through 1987 Continental and 1984 through 1992 Mark VII models, the process is similar. Additionally, if the vehicle has air conditioning, the refrigerant gas must be discharged, and the refrigerant lines going through the firewall need to be disconnected. For 1973 through 1979 Continental and Mark series, the heater core can be removed without discharging the air conditioning system. Drain the cooling system, disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes, and remove the heater core cover to access the core. For 1970 through 1972 Continental and Mark series, disconnect the battery cable, drain the cooling system, and follow a detailed removal procedure to access and remove the heater core. Installation steps for each procedure should be carried out in reverse order.

Q:
How can you replace the heater core without air conditioning on 1979 through 1986 Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
A:
Without air conditioning, you can remove the heater core by partially draining the cooling system and loosening the clamps on the heater hoses. Twist and separate the hoses from the heater core tubes, and plug or cap the tubes to prevent coolant spills. Place a plastic sheet on the vehicle floor for protection. Remove the glovebox liner and instrument panel-to-cowl brace. Set the temperature lever to Warm and remove the heater core cover through the glovebox opening. Loosen the three stud nuts in the engine compartment to detach the heater core from the heater case. Pull the heater core through the glovebox opening and position it with the tubes on top. Slide it back into the heater case and secure the heater core cover. Tighten the stud nuts, reinstall the instrument panel-to-cowl brace, and replace the glovebox liner. Uncap or unplug the heater core tubes and reconnect the hoses. Finally, fill the cooling system, check for leaks, and test the heater.

Q:
How does the heater in a Mercury Capri work? Posted by Customer
A:
The heater circulates engine coolant through a small radiator (heater core) in the passenger compartment. Air is drawn in through an opening in the cowl, then blown through the heater core by the blower motor to pick up heat. The heated air is blended with varying amounts of unheated air to regulate its temperature. The heated air is then blown into the passenger compartment. Various doors in the heater control the flow of air to the floor, instrument panel, and defroster outlets.
