Q:
What Are the Different Automatic Transmissions Available on Ford Bronco, and How Do They Differ in Terms of Torque Capacity and Speed/Load Sensing Mechanisms? Posted by Customer
A:
Since the introduction of the F-series and Bronco, various automatic transmissions have been available. These include the AOC 4-speed, C4, C5, and C6 3-speed transmissions. In 1988, the E4OD 4-speed transmission was introduced alongside the C6 and AOC models. The 4R7OW 4-speed became available in certain models in 1993. The main differences between these transmissions lie in their torque capacity and speed/load sensing mechanisms for shift points. The C-series transmissions use a governor and vacuum diaphragm throttle valve for speed and load sensing, while the AOD transmission uses a governor and throttle valve rod or cable. The E4OD transmission utilizes engine and drivetrain sensors, along with special programming in the EEC computer, to calculate speed and load conditions and initiate shifts. If repairs or overhaul are needed, it is recommended to seek assistance from a qualified dealership or shop. However, if cost is a concern, replacing the faulty transmission with a new or rebuilt unit may be an option. It is important to use high-temperature-resistant seals on these transmissions and avoid using older design seals.

Take off the driveplate-to-converter attaching nuts, making sure to mark their relationship to the driveplate. 6. Rotate the engine to access the converter drain plug and remove it. 7. On 2WD models, remove the driveshaft and cover the transmission end. On 4WD models, remove the transfer case. 8. Detach the speedometer cable on pre-1992 2WD models. 9. Remove the manual shift linkage, TV control rod or cable, kickdown rod or cable, and vacuum modulator hose if equipped. 10. Disconnect the neutral safety switch electrical connector, manual lever position sensor electrical connector (E4OD only), and solenoid body electrical connector (E4OD only). 11. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube and dipstick. 12. Take out the starter and disconnect the oil cooler lines. 13. Position a transmission jack and remove the rear mount and insulators. 14. Remove any gussets and the crossmember. 15. Disconnect the inlet pipe flange(s) from the exhaust manifold(s). 16. Support the rear of the engine and remove the transmission housing-to-engine bolts. 17.
