Q:
How to remove and install a Fuel Pump on Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the fuel tank. Remove any dirt that has accumulated where the fuel sender/pump is attached to the fuel tank. Don't allow dirt to enter the fuel tank. Tum the lock ring counterclockwise with lock/ring wrench (or other suitable tool) until It's loose. Remove the lock ring. Carefully pull the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank. Don't bend the arm for the sending unit float. Remove the old lock ring seal and discard it. Clean the fuel pump mounting flange, the tan mounting surface and seal ring groove. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure with the following additions: Apply a thin coat of heavy grease to the new lock ring seal to hold it in place during assembly. Install the seal in the lock ring groove. Install the fuel sender/pump unit into the fuel tank so that the tabs of the unit are positioned into the slots in the fuel tank. Make sure to keep the seal in place during installation until the lock ring has been tightened properly. Hold the fuel sender/pump unit in place, install and tighten the locking ring clockwise with the lock ring wrench, or equivalent, until the stop is against the retainer ring tab.

Q:
How to verify and diagnose a fuel pump defect on Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
A:
Before assuming a fuel pump defect, it is crucial to ensure there is fuel in the tank. An electric fuel pump malfunction typically results in reduced fuel flow or pressure, leading to decreased performance or a no-run condition. To verify the pump's operation, remove the fuel filler cap and have an assistant turn the ignition switch to On, listening for a brief whirring noise as the pump pressurizes the system. If the pump doesn't run, check the fuel pump fuse and relay. If the fuse is intact, proceed to check the inertia switch and, if necessary, perform a direct test by grounding the negative terminal and applying 12 volts to the fuel pump feed terminal. If the pump still doesn't run, the issue lies in the electrical circuit. For a pressure check, use a fuel pressure gauge on the test port, comparing readings at key positions. For return-type fuel systems, check pressure at idle and perform additional tests, such as disconnecting the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. For return-less systems, connect the gauge between the fuel delivery hose and the fuel rail. After testing, check hold pressure and inspect for leaks or defects in the fuel system components, injectors, or pump, and relieve fuel pressure.
