Spark plug replacement is an essential maintenance task for engine health. While the manufacturer specifies varying replacement intervals for different engine models, we recommend a 60,000-mile interval for most late-model engines to prevent fouling and erosion issues that can lead to misfiring. To replace spark plugs, you'll need a spark plug socket, extensions, and a gap gauge. Start by allowing the engine to cool completely and checking the new plugs for defects and adjusting their gaps. After cooling, remove one spark plug wire at a time, using a plug wire removal tool if available. Blow away any debris around the spark plug hole. Use the spark plug socket to remove the plug, compare its condition to a spark plug condition chart, and replace it with a new one. Tighten the new plug with a torque wrench or ratchet. Before reconnecting the spark plug wire, apply silicone dielectric compound to the inside of each boot. Inspect the spark plug wires while the engine is running for arcing or sparks, and replace any damaged wires. It's crucial to install the wires in the correct order, starting with the number one cylinder, which can be identified and labeled for clarity. Disconnect each wire from the spark plug and ignition coil pack or distributor one at a time, checking for secure fitment and corrosion, and replace any damaged wires as needed.
