  Q: How to remove and install an air conditioning compressor in a Ford Taurus?

  A: Have the air conditioning system recovered by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop before proceeding. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the lower radiator splash shield and engine splash shield (if equipped). Remove the drivebelt. On 2007 and earlier models, remove the cooling fan assembly. If equipped, remove the air conditioning compressor shield fasteners and remove the shield. For four-cylinder models, detach the wiring harness from the air conditioning compressor and move it aside. Remove the refrigerant line nuts. Disconnect the refrigerant inlet and outlet lines from the compressor. Remove and discard the old O-rings. Remove the compressor mounting nut. Completely loosen the air conditioning compressor mounting stud and bolt and remove the compressor from the vehicle. For V6 models, disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch field coil. Disconnect the pressure transducer electrical connector, if equipped. Remove the refrigerant line mounting nuts. Disconnect the refrigerant inlet and outlet lines from the compressor. Remove and discard the old O-rings. On 2013 and later models, detach the wire harness from the air conditioning compressor and move it aside. On 2012 and earlier models, the harness may be held by a bracket; remove the mounting bracket bolt and move the harness aside. Remove the lower compressor mounting nut and completely loosen the stud. Completely remove the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts and remove the compressor from the vehicle. If a new compressor is being installed follow the directions that came with the compressor regarding the draining of excess oil prior to installation. The clutch may have to be transferred from the original to the new compressor. Before reconnecting the inlet and outlet lines to the compressor, replace all O-rings and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Have the system evacuated, recharge and leak-tested by the shop that discharged it.
