Q:
How to remove and install the leaf spring and air spring on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
A:
This procedure applies only to trucks. If the vehicle is equipped with air suspension, turn off the air suspension system. The switch is located in the area of the right kick panel. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling off the stands. Remove the rear wheels. Support the axle with a floor jack and raise it slightly to relieve the tension on the leaf springs. On vehicles with air suspension, unbolt the anti-wind bar from the axle. Remove the four U-bolt nuts, the spring plate, the rear spring spacer (4WD models only), and the two U-bolts. Lower the floor jack to allow the spring to unload. At the front end of the spring, remove the nut and bolt from the spring-to-front bracket. At the rear end of the spring, remove the upper spring-to-shackle nut and bolt. Remove the spring assembly. If the bushings at the ends of the spring are worn or deteriorated, an automotive machine shop or dealer service department can press the old ones out and press new ones in. Installation is the reverse of removal. Gradually tighten the U-bolt nuts in a criss-cross pattern. Then tighten all the fasteners. Lower the vehicle. Reactivate the air suspension system, if equipped. Turn off the air suspension system. Depress the red plastic retaining ring and disconnect the air line from the solenoid valve. Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid valve. Remove the retaining clip from the top of the air spring. Compress the air spring and remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal. Lower the vehicle and reactivate the air suspension system. Start the engine and allow the compressor to fill the air suspension system. Do NOT drive the vehicle until the air suspension system has been restored.
