Periodic checks of the steering linkage and suspension components are essential for maintaining a vehicle's performance and safety because worn or damaged components in these systems can lead to various problems. Q:
How to replace the CV Boot on Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
A:
To disassemble and inspect the CV joints and CV Boot, first, consider the condition of the CV joints, especially if torn boots indicate wear. Explore options such as complete rebuilt driveaxles, as they can save time and effort. If you proceed with the disassembly, follow these steps. Remove the driveaxle from the vehicle, mount it securely in a vise, and cut off and discard the boot clamps. Slide back the boot and remove the wire ring ball retainer from the outer race. Take off the outer race and wipe the inner bearing clean. Remove the snap-ring from the axleshaft and slide off the inner bearing assembly. Mark the inner race and cage for correct reassembly, then pry the balls from the cage and rotate the inner race to remove it from the cage. Inspect the cage, races, and inner race lands and grooves for wear and damage. Clean the components with solvent. Reassemble the inner race into the cage, press the balls into the cage windows, and reassemble the joint. Lubricate and install a new boot clamp and boot onto the axleshaft. Install the inner bearing assembly, snap-ring, and outer race, and secure them with the wire ring retainer. Fill the outer race with CV joint grease, pack the inner race and cage assembly with grease, and slide the outer race onto the inner race. Install the boot, clamps, and adjust the driveaxle length if needed. Equalize the pressure inside the boot, crimp the boot clamps in place, and reinstall the driveaxle. For the outer CV joint and CV Boot, remember that the outer CV joint is non-serviceable, so if it's damaged, replace the entire driveaxle assembly. Remove the driveaxle, cut off the boot clamps, and remove the inner CV joint and CV Boot as previously described. Then remove the outer CV Boot, clean and inspect the outer CV joint assembly, and replace the axle assembly if any components show excessive wear. Install the new outer boot and clamps, repack the outer CV joint with grease, and position the boot. Reassemble the inner CV joint and CV Boot, install the driveaxle, and complete the process.

Q:
How should you reassemble the inner CV joint for the 2002 Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
A:
When reassembling, ensure the match marks align, press the balls into the cage, and apply grease. Wrap tape around the axleshaft splines to protect the boot, slide the small boot clamp and boot onto the axleshaft, remove the tape, and install the inner race and cage assembly. Add a snap-ring, fill the outer race with CV joint grease, pack the inner race and cage assembly with grease, and reassemble the outer race with a wire ring retainer.
