Q:
How to replace and adjust the DTR sensor in 1993-2011 Ford Ranger with an automatic transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
This procedure applies only to later model vehicles with an automatic transmission. The following procedure is intended for the home mechanic who does not possess or have access to the special DTR sensor alignment tool used by dealership service departments to align the DTR sensor, because it's difficult to obtain one of these special alignment tools. The method described here for aligning the DTR sensor should be adequate. If it isn't, drive the vehicle to a dealer or other repair shop after installing the DTR sensor and have it adjusted. Failure to do so might set a Diagnostic Trouble Code and cause driveability problems. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Place the shift lever inside the vehicle in the NEUTRAL ("N") position. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. The DTR sensor is located at the manual lever, on the left side of the transmission. Peel back the rubber boot that protects the DTR sensor electrical connector, then disconnect the electrical connector from the DTR sensor. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever by pulling it UP. Remove the manual lever from the manual lever shaft. Mark the relationship of the DTR sensor to the transmission. Remove the DTR sensor mounting bolts and remove the DTR sensor from the manual lever shaft. Before installing the DTR sensor make sure that the transmission is still in Neutral. If you're not sure, take the manual lever and use it to rotate the manual lever shaft counterclockwise until it stops, then rotate the manual lever shaft two clicks clockwise. The transmission is now in Neutral. If you look closely at the DTR sensor, you will see Neutral alignment marks on the sensor's rotating inner ring and on the stationary ring around the periphery of the rotating ring. Align the Neutral marks on these two rings and then slide the DTR sensor onto the manual lever shaft. When everything is correctly aligned tighten the DTR sensor mounting bolts. Recheck the alignment of the Neutral marks. If they're off, loosen the bolts, readjust the DTR sensor and re-tighten the bolts. Caution: To prevent binding and consequent damage to the DTR, always loosen or tighten the two bolts evenly; turn one bolt one turn, then turn the other bolt one turn, and alternate until both bolts are either removed or installed. The remainder of installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. If necessary, drive the vehicle to a dealer and have the DTR sensor realigned.
