Q:
How to Check the Shock Absorber and CV Boot on Your Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
A:
Periodic checks of the steering linkage and suspension components are essential to maintain vehicle performance and safety. Worn or damaged components in these systems can lead to problems like abnormal tire wear, diminished ride quality, poor vehicle handling, and reduced fuel economy. To assess the condition of shock absorbers, park the vehicle on level ground, turn off the engine, and set the parking brake. Check tire pressures and push down on each corner of the vehicle, observing its movement and rebound. Properly functioning shock absorbers should bring the vehicle to a rest in a level position within one or two bounces; if not, worn or weak shock absorbers may be the cause. Repeat this check for all four corners. Additionally, while the vehicle is raised on jackstands, inspect shock absorbers for fluid leakage and ensure they are securely mounted and undamaged. If fluid leakage is detected, replace the shocks as a set. For the steering and suspension components, visually examine them for damage, distortion, damaged seals, boots, bushings, and any leaks. Pay attention to the bushings at the control arm chassis mounting points. To check the steering system, clean the lower end of the steering knuckle and have an assistant move the wheel in and out while looking for movement at the steering knuckle-to-control arm balljoint. Any movement indicates a need for suspension balljoint replacement. Grasping each front tire and pushing and pulling to feel for play in the steering system components can help detect issues. If freeplay is noted, inspect the idler arm and tie-rod ends for looseness. Regularly inspecting CV boots, especially the outer CV boot, on 4WD models is crucial as they protect CV joints from dirt and damage. Clean the CV Boot with soap and water to prevent oil and grease from deteriorating them. Inspect for tears, cracks, and loose clamps, and if any evidence of damage or lubricant leakage is found, replace the CV Boot promptly.
