How to remove and install a steering column on Ford Escape?

Park the vehicle with wheels straight. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel and turn ignition key to LOCK position. Remove steering column covers and clockspring. Disconnect electrical connectors for multi-function switch. Remove shift cable if equipped. Mark U-joint relationship and remove pinch bolt and nut. Remove steering column mounting fasteners, lower column, and remove. Guide steering column into position and install mounting fasteners. Connect U-joint to intermediate shaft. Install new pinch bolt and nut. Reverse removal steps. After reconnecting battery, PCM must relearn idle and fuel mixture trim strategy.
