What is the purpose and functionality of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System and Air Bag on Ford Explorer?

Succeeding models are fitted with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) more famously known as the airbag that helps to minimize the impact of injuries in the event of head-on or frontal impacts. This system comprises an air bag module within the vicinity of the steering wheel, on the right side of the instrument, and in some 2001 models with side air bags, a side air bag installed on the outside of both front seats. Crash sensors are installed at the front part of the car, while a diagnostic monitor which has an emergency power supply is located in the passenger compartment . From 2003 releases onwards, there is an optional ''side-curtain'' that replaces the side-impact airbags in the seats and offers protection to both the front and rear seat occupants in side collision or roll-over accidents. Air bag inflater module is installed in the steering wheel and is comprised of housing that contains cushion and inflater unit which inflates the bags almost in split seconds as soon as it receives an electrical impulse signal. This switch is situated in a coil assembly in the steering column and transmits this signal irrespective of the position of the steering wheel, the igniter in this case converts this signal to heat and by using sodium aside copper oxide powder, nitrogen gas is produced for inflation. The airbag near the instrument panel, to be larger than the one attached to the steering wheel, is placed above the summer compartment; it contains an inflator, a bag assembly, a reaction housing, and a trim cover which divides along midline upon inflation. The outboard side of the front seat backs include the side airbag that includes a seat cover material for the airbag. Subsequent models have done away with the available seat mounted side-impact airbags for the improved 'Safety-Canopy' curtain type airbags. The airbag system includes three sensors: The ESC is connected to two forward sensors put at the front part of the vehicle and a sensing sensor in the electronic diagnostic monitor, while the optional side airbag system has two sensors on the "B" pillars. These are pressure sensitive switches that alternatively close electrical circuit during enough pressure adequate for the signal to light the electronic diagnostic monitor of air bags inflation. This electronic diagnostic monitor puts current through the airbag system during a collision even if the battery has been disconnected and tests the system each time the car is started by lighting the 'AIR BAG' light if it is working satisfactorily. There are lights that remain on, blink or even give out a beeping sound when a fault is detected and this calls for servicing. It is recommended to check the light to see the flashes, which reflect specific codes of the car dealer before going to the dealer. If working in proximity to the steering wheel or parts related to the airbag, the ignition switch has to be turned off and the battery cables disconnected; the control panel of the electronic module must be allowed to discharge its reserve power source for about two minutes. In order to turn the system back on, the ignition switch should be set off; the positive terminal should be connected to the battery before the negative one.
