Ford Explorer Engine Mount Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How should engine mounts be checked and replaced in 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on Ford Explorer?
A: Engine mounts are usually trouble-free, but if some of them are cracks or completely worn out, they should be replaced to prevent further damage or wear of other drive line parts. To check the mounts, the engine has to be lifted a little so as to take the weight off the mounts. First, lift the car and apply jack stands after that, place the jack underneath the engine oil pan. If it has Automatic Ride Control, switch off the air suspension switch before lifting it to prevent the damaging of it's components. Put a piece of wood with about the same diameter as the jack head but wider in thickness than the oil pan separating the two surfaces, then lift the engine approximately off the weight placed on the mounts. Check the mounts for cracks, when the rubber has become too hard and if the rubber mounts have detached from the metal plates a little bit of space is always apparent and the rubber will be split down the middle. Make sure that mount plates move relatively to the engine or frame, if this is observable, then lower down the engine and torqued the mount fasteners using large screwdriver pry-bar. To retard the process of deterioration, then the mounts should be treated with rubber preservative. For replacement, first, remove the negative battery terminal, then lift the vehicle, and set it on jack stands, if the vehicle contains Automatic Ride Control, make sure set the Air Suspension switch off. Loosen the engine electric cooling fan/shroud assembly to reveal four nuts of the mount to the engine bracket which are done from inside the engine compartment on the top. Lift the engine up a little with a jack or hoist, then take off the mount-through bolt/nut and cut off the mount from the bracket of the chassis. Than removal, installation is the opposite; one should apply thread locking on the mount bolts, and tighten them.
