How to remove and install the instrument panel on Ford Explorer?

The change of the instrument panel is quite heavy and it requires quite some effort to change, thus it is wise for at least two people to change it. For 1994 and earlier models the procedure is essentially to unhook the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, and then there are screws that hold the hood release cable in place to the lower instrument panel cover, and also at the bottom of the lower cover and there are few more screws next to the top of the cover that screw into the instrument panel and the top is snapped off. Subsequently, take off the lower instrument panel cover reinforcement brace, ash trap and its holder, as well as insulation of the steering column. Go ahead and pull out the instrument cluster bezel and the instrument cluster as well, I also recall taking out inside A-pillar moldings and kick panel from both sides and passenger side lower insulation panel too. Remove the nut which fastens the instrument panel panel to the brake pedal support bracket and the wiring harness bolted to the steering column, and the bolts which secures each side of the instrument panel to the cowl sides and the screws fixating the cowl top. After having freed all the screws connected to the lights and switches and radio and the heater/air conditioning control assembly and the wires of the antenna to the radio and the vacuum hose and the control cables to the heater/air conditioning control assembly carefully pull the instrument panel back slightly to disconnect electrical connectors and then carefully take out the instrument panel from the car. For 1995 and later models remove the negative battery cable first, then the positive battery cable, and wait two minutes before moving further. Align the steering wheel in the lock position and make sure that it does not move during the process of this procedure to prevent case that would harm the airbag sliding contact. Take out the center console if installed, followed by the lower instrument panel cover, reinforcement panel, and the instrument cluster bezel after which you set the instrument cluster. Take out some plastic pushpins and rivets and take off the lower insulation panel on the passenger side together with A pillar moldings and both kick panels. Pull the glove box and remove the hinge to pull out the retaining screws of the glove box. Finally, take the two bolts which secures the passenger airbag and then sliding the unit out of the instrument panel and pulling away from it you will have to disconnect it from the electrical connector. Treat the airbag module gently so that the trim side is toward the bottom, and place the airbag module where the trim side is toward the top. Unscrew the center trim panel around the instrument panel and drag it out, and take out the radio connecting wires and the wires behind the heater/air conditioning control assembly. At the right of the throttle pedal, unscrew the bolts of the lower instrument panel brace and the bolts of the steering column mounting and lower and supporting the steering column. Pop open the fuse panel cover at the left corners of the instrument panel and then take out the two screws which are behind the cover, and the one screw on the lower right part of the instrument panel. Pop out the defroster bezels and then take out the screws which is on the upper region of the instrument panel. Slide the instrument panel gently backwards in order to empty all electrical connector or wiring harness clips connected to it. In the 1997 and later model, it is possible to disconnect the wiring harness from the body while still keeping the harness connected to the instrument panel and leave the harness attached to the body at different connectors including the electrical connector at brake pedal position switch and all the electrical harness connectors coupled with ground wires that are located at the /or panel. Last of all, installation is the exact process of the removal procedure with the only aspect of caution being not to reconnect the battery until all electrical connections have been tightened, notably the passenger airbag.

Align the steering wheel in the lock position and make sure that it does not move during the process of this procedure to prevent case that would harm the airbag sliding contact. Take out the center console if installed, followed by the lower instrument panel cover, reinforcement panel, and the instrument cluster bezel after which you set the instrument cluster. Take out some plastic pushpins and rivets and take off the lower insulation panel on the passenger side together with A pillar moldings and both kick panels. Pull the glove box and remove the hinge to pull out the retaining screws of the glove box. Finally, take the two bolts which secures the passenger airbag and then sliding the unit out of the instrument panel and pulling away from it you will have to disconnect it from the electrical connector. Treat the airbag module gently so that the trim side is toward the bottom, and place the airbag module where the trim side is toward the top. Unscrew the center trim panel around the instrument panel and drag it out, and take out the radio connecting wires and the wires behind the heater/air conditioning control assembly. At the right of the throttle pedal, unscrew the bolts of the lower instrument panel brace and the bolts of the steering column mounting and lower and supporting the steering column. Pop open the fuse panel cover at the left corners of the instrument panel and then take out the two screws which are behind the cover, and the one screw on the lower right part of the instrument panel. Pop out the defroster bezels and then take out the screws which is on the upper region of the instrument panel. Slide the instrument panel gently backwards in order to empty all electrical connector or wiring harness clips connected to it. In the 1997 and later model, it is possible to disconnect the wiring harness from the body while still keeping the harness connected to the instrument panel and leave the harness attached to the body at different connectors including the electrical connector at brake pedal position switch and all the electrical harness connectors coupled with ground wires that are located at the /or panel. Last of all, installation is the exact process of the removal procedure with the only aspect of caution being not to reconnect the battery until all electrical connections have been tightened, notably the passenger airbag.
