Q: How to check and replace a water pump on Ford Explorer?
A: When the engine is hot, you should press the upper radiator hose to check if the water pump is alright. A flashlight can be used to find leaks through weep or vent holes. At the front of the engine listen for a howling sound and then check for shaft wear. Before removing the fan, pulley and hoses, drain the cooling system by disconnecting the battery since power will be shut off. Then go ahead and take out alternator only if necessary. Seal up every surface, attach a new pump with gasket, and tighten bolts. Lastly, after reinstalling all parts, fill up your system again ensuring that belt tension is ok when starting your car and run it while checking for any leaks.
