Q: How do you replace the engine oil cooler on a Ford Explorer Sport Trac equipped with a towing package?
A: Some 5.0L V8 models with a towing package have an engine oil cooler. To replace it, remove the oil filter and drain the cooling system. If not removing the cooler from the vehicle, do not drain the cooling system or disconnect the coolant hoses. Disconnect the hoses from the cooler. Remove the bolt holding the cooler housing to the filter adapter housing. Pull out the cooler from the adapter. Clean the adapter and cooler of old gasket material. Install the cooler with a new O-ring against the adapter, aligning its pins over the boss. Install a new O-ring on the bolt and tighten it. Reconnect the hoses if removed, then install a new filter, refill and bleed the cooling system, and check for leaks.
