Ford Explorer Sport Trac Washer Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and install Washer Pump and Washer Reservoir on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: To service the front washer, start by unlocking the electrical connector tabs with a small screwdriver and unplugging the washer pump electrical connector. For models from 2001 onward, remove the air cleaner. Next, take out the two screws that secure the washer reservoir and pump motor assembly to the fender well; note that on later models, the windshield washer reservoir and coolant recovery tank are combined. Lift the washer reservoir and disconnect the small hose at its base, covering the end to prevent fluid spillage, then remove the reservoir. Drain the washer fluid into a clean container for potential reuse. Use a small screwdriver to carefully pry out the retaining ring that holds the pump motor in place, then grasp the wall surrounding the electrical terminal with pliers and pull the motor, seal, and impeller assembly out. If the impeller and seal separate from the motor, they can be reassembled. Clean the reservoir with water and inspect it for any debris. Before installing an old motor into a new reservoir, check the pump chamber and clean it if needed. Lubricate the outer surface of the seal with powdered graphite for easier installation, align the small projection on the motor end cap with the slot in the reservoir, and push it in until the seal is seated. Secure the retaining ring against the motor and plate using a 1-inch 12-point socket, then connect the hose to the reservoir fitting. Install the reservoir in the engine compartment, secure it with screws, and reconnect the electrical connector. Ensure the pump is not operated without fluid in the reservoir to avoid damage, then fill the reservoir, operate the pump, and check for leaks. For the rear washer, applicable only to models from 1991 to 1996, remove the quarter trim panel from the driver's side of the cargo area, disconnect the filler hose and electrical connector from the pump motor, pour the fluid into a container, and disconnect the discharge hose before removing the reservoir. Carefully pry the pump out of the reservoir, remove the seal and filter, and during installation, lubricate the inside of the seal with soapy water before pushing the pump in securely. Fill the reservoir slowly to avoid trapping air in the system, and do not operate the washers without fluid.
