Ford Ranger Drag Link Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the drag link on Ford Ranger?
A: To detach the drag link, firstly, lift the car at the front and place it on the jack stands, and at the rear side, use bricks or wedges and apply the parking brake so as to have the front wheels facing forward. Then remove the three cotter pins followed by nuts that are used to hold the drag link to the steering connecting arm as well as the Pitman arm. Unscrew the clamp bolt which is on the side of the tie-rod adjusting sleeve, and then rotate the sleeve backwards in anticlockwise direction until it has been backed-off the drag link to a point that it can be completely unbolted and then unbolt the drag link. For installation simply slide the drag link ball stud into the Pitman arm and align the steering connecting arm ball end into the drag link while turning the wheels straight ahead to lock the ball ends into the taper and prevent them from rotating when tightening the nuts. Place the drag link to the tie-rod adjusting sleeve and twist the sleeve in the same degree as before, tightening the clamp bolts to the required amount of kg-splitting. On the studs of the Pitman arm and steering connecting arm new nuts should be put and tightened to the required torque, and on new cotter pins the ends should be bent over as required fully. Last, screw in the wheel and the lug nuts, jack down the car, tighten lug nuts to the recommended torque and get the front end alignment checked from a dealership service department or any alignment centre.
