Ford Ranger Torsion Bar Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What special tool is required for the safe removal and installation of the torsion bar on 1998-2011 Ford Ranger?
A: An equipment that is specifically developed to be used in the removal and installation of torsion bar will be needed to carry out the following tasks. Start by turning the front wheels forward to the straight position, lifting the automobile and putting it on jackstands. Disconnect the torsion bar cover plate from the frame of the vehicle. Ensure that no alterations have been made to the torsion bar and take a measurement of the extent that the torsion bar adjustment bolt has to travel on the adjustment nut so that this will be useful later. Screw the special tool onto the cross-member and the torsion bar adjuster to the specified torque and the latter must rise from the adjustment bolt. Remove the adjustment bolt from the torsion bar nut, and determine the number of turns done- you are to note this number. The adjustment bolt and nut are then to be taken out, and the new one must be used while the old one is discarded because it has a special adhesive that makes it impossible to back off easily. Loosen the torsion bar tool until there is no tension on the torsion bar, place a mark of the relation between the torsion bar and the adjuster, lower the adjuster, and pull the torsion bar out of the lower control arm finally removing the insulator. In installation, the procedure is reversed and make sure a new adjustment bolt that you have is coated with adhesive from the factory. Replace the old bolt with a new one, turn the bolt with the same amount of turns as the old one was turned then measure the height of the bolt from the adjustment nut and check this measurement against the previous measurement. The following are the procedures one needs to follow to adjust torsion bars after lowering the vehicle; make sure the vehicle rests as close to level from side to side as possible on available suspension while seating and rotating the torsion bar adjustment bolt. Drive your car backward and forward and bounce the suspension before and after, between position changes, and get the front-end alignment either at a dealer or better yet, at an alignment center.
