Mercury Capri Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the purpose and function of the Supplemental Restraint System and Air Bag on Mercury Capri?
A: Later models have the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), sometimes referred to as an airbag, to protect the head and torso of the driver in case of a head-on or frontal impact. The elements of this system are an airbag module installed in the centre of the front bord, three crash sensors mounted in the front part of the vehicle, one crash sensor in the passenger compartment and a diagnostic module in the dashboard. The airbag is located in a housing contained in the inflator module and this inflates the bag nearly simultaneously with an electric signal. The position of the signal can be passed by a coil assembly on the steering column, and igniter alters the signal into heat and light the charge to blow the bag. The system features four sensors: on the left and right sides behind the headlights are two of them, one is in the middle behind the grille, and the last one's on the left-side B-pillar. These pressure-sensitive switches are closed by sufficient impact to complete an electrical circuit to the electronic diagnostic monitor who in turn turns the airbag on. The vehicle featured a monitor placed behind the panel of the heater and air conditioner It provides electrical power to the airbag system in case of an accident and conducts a check every time the car is switched on, causing the 'AIRBAG' light to blaze if everything is working well. The light on the LCM will go on steady, blink or emit a beep, depending on the fault that has been diagnosed to require service. To ensure disablement of the system when within the vicinity of steering wheel or airbag mechanism, the Ignition Switch must be turned off, the negative cable of the battery disconnected and then the positive cable disconnected and at least two minutes wait so that the power supply for the backup electronic module is drained. To power the system the ignition switch should be off, the positive cable of the battery connected first and then negative cable.
