Q: How to check and replace the spark plug wires and Distributor Cap on Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: Inspect the wires visually while the engine is running in a dark, well-ventilated garage to maintain Spark Plug wires. Watch out for arcs or sparks that indicate wear and tear on them. One cylinder at a time, examine the wires starting with number one and mark them accordingly. A wire can be disconnected without removing the wire itself by using a removal tool or twisting and pulling the rubber boot. Ensuring a tight fit, push the wire and boot onto the spark plug. The metal connector inside the boot should be crimped when required. Clean the wire with a rag; check for burns, cracks or damage and inspect for corrosion at distributor end and snug fitting. Replace damaged wires with those made for your engine model and replace one at a time so that you do not disturb firing order. Replace 1991 and earlier models' distributor cap and rotor if they are worn out, damaged or cracked or have carbon tracks or worn terminals.
