Q: How to replace a tie-rod end on a Mercury Mariner?
A: Loosen front wheel lug nuts. Apply parking brake, raise front of vehicle and support securely on jackstands. Remove front wheel. Remove cotter pin from castle nut and loosen nut. Loosen nut on tie-rod end stud. Hold tie-rod with locking pliers or wrench and loosen jam nut enough to mark position of tie-rod end. Disconnect tie-rod end from steering knuckle arm with puller. Remove nut and detach tie-rod end. Unscrew tie-rod end from tie-rod. Thread tie-rod end to marked position and insert stud into steering knuckle arm. Tighten jam nut securely. Install castle nut on stud and tighten to torque. Install new cotter pin. If hole for cotter pin doesn't line up with slot in nut, tighten nut until it does. Install wheel and lug nuts. Lower vehicle and tighten lug nuts to torque. Have alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted.
