Mercury Zephyr Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a heater core in a Mercury Zephyr?
A: Loosen the radiator cap, open the radiator drain cock and partially drain the cooling system which will also drain the heater core. Disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses where they enter the back of the core. Plug the heater core tubes to prevent spillage when the core is removed inside the vehicle. Remove the glove box inner liner to give access to the heater core cover. Note: Some vehicles may not have a removable cover for access to the heater core. To replace the core on such vehicles, the entire heater case must be removed and disassembled. Remove the instrument panel cowl brace. Move the temperature control lever to the Warm position. Through the glove box opening, remove the 4 screws retaining the heater core cover and remove the cover. Loosen the 3 heater case mounting studs from the engine compartment side. Push the heater core tubes and seal toward the inside of the vehicle to separate the core assembly from the heater case. Withdraw the heater core assembly through the glove box and remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system and check the heater for proper operation.
