Mercury Zephyr Water Pump

Specifically, the Mercury Zephyr vehicles Water Pump is a vital component of the engine since it is responsible for moving coolant from the radiator to the engine and in the process, it cools down the hot fluid produced by burning fuel. Almost all Zephyr Water Pumps are driven by the crankshaft through a belt; however, the current models come with electric pumps. These pumps normally employ a cast aluminium assemble with rotating shaft, belt driven pulley and an impeller to circulate the coolant in the devise. Signs and indication that a vehicle requires Water Pump replacement include problems in the cooler system, noises made by bearings, and excessive heating of the engine. There are Performance Water Pumps for high performance engines with higher flow rate and lower power draw over standard pumps. Another type of water pumps is electric water pumps to remove parasitic AC power loss and for freer installation positions in various applications.

Mercury Zephyr Water Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a water pump on Mercury Zephyr?
A: The water pump is of the impeller type and is driven by an accessory drivebelt off the oil pump. Operation of the pump is dependent upon proper drivebelt adjustment and proper condition of the pump. The water pump need never be removed unless the engine block is being stripped down for rebuilding, or if the pump itself proves defective. Signs of water pump failure include coolant leakage, noisy operation, and excess vibration of the cooling fan and driveshaft. Do not confuse an out-of-balance fan with a defective water pump. Always remove the fan and check the radial play of the water pump shaft. This is accomplished by grasping the water pump pulley and attempting to rock the mounting shaft up and down and from side to side. If rocking is felt the problem is most likely with the water pump. Removal of the water pump is as follows: Disconnect the negative lead from the battery. Remove the fan and shroud. Drain the cooling system. Loosen and remove all Drive Belts. On some models, one of the water pump mounting bolts is also a bracket for the alternator. Remove the nut which holds the bracket in place and move it out of your work area. Remove the four bolts which hold the fan pulley to the water pump flange and remove the pulley. Remove the hoses which are connected to the water pump. Remove the four bolts which hold the water pump to the engine block. The water pump is located by three locating pins which match up to holes in the engine block. In order to break the seal between the engine and the pump, it is necessary to rap on the water pump flange with a rubber mallet or a hammer and block of wood. Do not insert any tools or other levering devices between the engine block and the water pump in an attempt to pry them apart as damage to the sealing surfaces may result. Clean all sealing surfaces with a gasket removal tool or a putty knife. Do not use a razor blade as this may damage the sealing surfaces. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Coat the water pump gasket with a thin coating of water proof sealant before installing it on the seal surface of the water pump. Tighten the four water pump bolts evenly, wait about five minutes for the sealer to be pushed down, then retighten the bolts. Fill the cooling system with fresh coolant when parts installation and belt adjustment is complete.
