    Q:
How to remove and install the speedometer cable and casing on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
For the speedometer cable and its casing, it must first be pointed out that the latest models in Diahatsu have an electronic type of speedometer, which is controlled by signals from the vehicle speed sensor. If the cable has to be replaced then remove the cable core from the casing and insert a new one by the process of performing the above mentioned steps in reverse manner. To remove the casing for accessing the speedometer cables, one should first remove the screw and clamp provided to fix the cable on the firewall secondly from the underneath of the vehicular remove the clamp screw and pull the cable and casing off from the transmission or transfer case. Reinstall the speedometer casing back to the head and if necessary fit it to the transmission as well but now using a new O-ring. Next for the gauges, but for the sake of the US Federal law that require the odometer in any replacement speedometer to have to match the mileage of the unit that was removed. The first thing to be done is to dismantle the instrument cluster followed by dismantle the lens and mask by unscrewing. Apply light pressure on the tabs at the rear of the speedometer to free the assemblies from the retainer prongs in the cluster housing, and lift or twist the gauges in order to disengage the prongs, as the side gauge assemblies must be taken out ahead of the centre gauge assembly where applicable on 1997 and later models. Last is to install in an order in relation to the steps of removal; using a 3/16-inch diameter ball of silicone dielectric compound before installing the cable if necessary, it must be applied to the drive hole of the speedometer head.
