Clean the brake assembly, then remove various components such as the secondary brake shoe retracting spring, primary shoe retracing spring, brake shoe adjusting lever, cable, guide plate, and parking brake link and spring.

To disconnect the upper control arm from the steering knuckle, remove the cotter pin from the balljoint castle nut, loosen the nut a few turns (without removing it), use a small puller to break the balljoint loose from the knuckle, and then remove the nut. Afterward, remove the upper control arm pivot bolts and nuts. During this process, inspect the pivot bolt bushings for wear. If they are worn, the control arm needs replacement. Also, inspect the upper balljoint seal. If it's leaking, replace the control arm, as the balljoint itself is not serviceable.

When dealing with stubborn fasteners due to rust or corrosion, use penetrating oil, wire brushes, and caution. Strategies like applying a sharp blow with a hammer, heating the fastener area, or using breaker bars can help. However, exercise caution to prevent thread damage or fire hazards. Replace difficult-to-unscrew fasteners with new ones. For safety, use reliable jackstands and prefer a hydraulic floor jack for lifting and supporting components during various operations.
