    Q:
How to remove and install the transmission on Ford Excursion? Posted by Customer
    A:
To take the transmission off, the cable should be disconnected from the negative terminal of the battery and the shift lever should be shifted to neutral. Lift the car and then dismantle the exhaust Y-pipe and the driveshaft that will help you in the next step. On models that have the 4WD, you can uninstall skid, and the transfer case if present. Subsequently, they are to detaching the oil filler tube mounting nut and also to disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines. Pull the shift cable away from the manual lever and remove the electrical connectors from this and other sensors. Take off the Starter Motor and if necessary the Power Take Off (PTO). For vehicles with gasoline engines, the plastic plug and an accompanying metal inspection cover must be removed while for the diesel engines an inspection cover for Torque cover retaining nuts is required. Locate the location of the torque converter to the driveplate, next loosen the four nuts similar to earlier steps while rotating the crankshaft. If the car you are modeling has a parking brake that is mounted in the transmission, get rid of the relevant bits. Deposit the hydraulic jack beneath the motor together with a wooden plank and tighten the chains of the jack on the transmission. Lift the transmission a little more to take out the crossmember and its bolts, then take out also the transmission mount. Free all the electrical harness and undo the bolts attaching the transmission to the engine. Following this remove all connections from the transmission and the jack and push the transmission and the jack to the back till the torque converter is disengaged from the driveplate, lock it to avoid falling. For installation, just make sure that there is an interference between the torque converter hub and the pump gear, then lift the transmission up to its setting while aligned horizontally. Position the torque converter marks on the drive plate and using the dowel pins, pull the transmission forward until the dowel pins go into holes, then fit the transmission to engine bolts. Fit the exhaust pipe, install the transaxle mount and cross member and lift off the jacks. Complete the oil cooler lines, bolt the shift cable, put new torque converter nuts, and fasten the transmission inspection cover. If so equipped, reinstall the starter motor and dipstick tube; install the transfer case and driveshaft if the vehicle has four-wheel drive. Bring the electrical connectors in place for the transmission, connect the negative battery terminal, add the recommended fluid to the transmission case and start the engine to look for any signs of leakage.
