    To release the components, first release the clutch rod and equalizer bar from the earlier model transmissions with mechanical connection. In the reverse light if apply an external slave cylinder remove the cylinder while leaving the hydraulic lines connected. On 4 WD models, remove the transfer case then the transmission as required by the CTS351117-20. Take off the bolts which hold the clutch housing on the engine block, and save all the shims that you will reuse later. On earlier models, pull back the release bearing and hub assembly in order to release the two retaining clips, on later models where the clutch housing is separate, just pull out the release bearing. Note that in single-piece transmission/clutch housing designs, you need to pull out the clutch release lever to provide you with access to the hub and bearing assembly for removal. You should try to rotate the outer part of the bearing while holding the center of it-if the bearing is overly loud, rigid or doesn't rotate freely, then you should replace it. Bearing should be wiped to remove deposits onto the surface being careful not to immerse it into a solvent, with check being made for damages, wears and cracks. Coat the release lever crown lightly with an adhesive lubricant and pack the inner depression of the bearing with high temperature grease; put a thin layer of the same on the transmission input shaft retainer plate tube. For the earlier models the clips used to retain the bearing hub should be fitted onto the release lever forks in a proper manner. On later types with split clutch housing, align the hub and release bearing channel with the release lever fork tans, and inspect the position of retaining clip. For 1 piece models the bearing should be fitted over the transmission input shaft tube then an application of grease should be made at the clutch release lever ball socket before finally applying pressure on the lever onto the ball stud such that it snaps in place with the optimum positioning of the retaining clip. Add a light film of high-temperature affecting grease on the release bearing face that faces the pressure plate diaphragm fingers and then fit the clutch housing back in position and tighten the bolts; the shims must be replaced if required. The process of installation, as could have been deduced, is followed in a sequence, which is the exact opposite of the sequence followed during removal. Practical note: for the vehicle with the concentric slave cylinder, the hydraulic line from the inlet must be disconnected, then transfer case and transmission must be removed and twist the release bearing and carrier assembly with the clutch housing until the preload spring pushes the release bearing off the slave cylinder. Check bearing for wear and replace if necessary and paint thin layer of high temperature lithium based grease on the release bearing face and lubricate the inner bushing of the bearing and carrier. Sliding the release bearing and carrier towards the slave cylinder until it hits the bottom, reverse the process and install. If clutch needs bleeding, then some extra steps are needed, to do that.
