    Q:
How do you adjust the Shift Cable on Ford Focus? Posted by Customer
    A:
To adjust the iB5 transaxle, initially, the driver should shift the shift lever to the neutral with the car running. Raise the shift lever boot and remove the surround panel at the bottom of it, if necessary severing the switch's wiring connections. Insert the shift lever base mechanism with the 1/8 inch drill at the bottom of the rod but make sure the spring has not been inserted yet. Engage the parking brake, lift the front wheels off the ground and place on axle stands, best to also remove the engine undershield if installed. Take off the selector mechanism cover on the transaxle housing as seven clips can be released. Loosen only the selector cable which is at the lowest position on the front side of the transaxle. Turn the colored insert of the selector cable towards the engine and place the transaxle selector lever in the middle position. Slide the lever all the way to the left and all the way to the right before restraining the selector cable. Replace the cover of the selector mechanism so that the clips fit, and then lower the car. Pull out the shift lever base mechanism and then take the drill bit out and then put back the surround panel. The engine must also be started with the clutch pressed in order to inspect the correct gear selection. The shift lever lock is required for the MTX75 and MT285 transaxles for getting zigzag adjustment and, though you can do it by trial and error without it, it is quite a time-consuming process. Start with engaging the parking brake and lifting the front wheels off the ground, or take off the engine undershield or the liner at the left-hand fenderwell if needed. For the 2005 and earlier models, shift the lever to neutral while for 2006 and later models shift the lever to the 4th gear. The position of shift and selector levers on the transaxle must be vertical in position after setting on Neutral. In the case that adjustment is required, to free the adjusters on the cables, one would have to press on the tabs found on the part of the red plastic slider. If using the special tool, pry out the shift lever boot frame and pull the boot up onto the shift knob and lock the shift lever in neutral. If the tool is not available, it is possible to have an assistant keep a shift lever in the approximate neutral position. Having selected neutral on the levers on the transaxle you need to lock the red plastic locking sliders. Take out the special tool if necessary and replace the boot to the shift lever. Lower the car, engage the starter with the clutch pedal pressed and check the gears.
