Block both front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling, then jack up the rear end and secure it on jackstands, ensuring not to get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Completely release the parking brake. For models from 1979 to 1986, loosen the cable locknut and adjusting nut to release cable tension, while for 1987 and later models, release the cable tension. Detach the cable(s) from the equalizer, then remove the cable snap fitting(s) and unbolt the cable brackets from the vehicle body. For models with rear drum brakes, remove the rear brake drum, take out the automatic adjuster spring, and adjust the automatic adjuster lever and small cable to access the end of the parking brake cable. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever on the secondary shoe, squeeze the cable retainer prongs together to fit through the hole in the backing plate, and pull the cable out. For models with rear disc brakes, disconnect the cable(s) from the caliper(s). Installation follows the reverse order of removal, adjust the parking brake, then remove the jackstands, lower the vehicle, unblock the front wheels, and check the parking brake operation.
