    Q:
How to remove, overhaul and install Brake Caliper on Mercury Lynx? Posted by Customer
    A:
On this step, you should also unlatch and turn the wheel lug nuts a little, lift the car using a jack and place supporting stands under it to ensure that the wheel does not rotate free when you try to remove it. Remove the brake hose from the back of the caliper, and using new sealing washers put it back in place on both ends in order to avoid leakage of the fluids and use a cloth and a plastic bag on the end of the hose to minimize the loss of brake fluid and possible contamination. If the caliper is being removed simply to access the disc then it is not necessary to disconnect the hose so as not to drain brake fluid, but be sure to hang the caliper from the strut using a piece of wire so that you do not damage the brake hose. Take the brake pads out of the caliper and clean the outside with brake cleaner or any type of alcohol solution do not use any gasoline or petroleum product. Place some woodblock or shop rags and blow air with the compressor to take the piston of the caliper, fingers should not be anywhere near this. Gently lift the dust boot and with a wooden or plastic marvell use it to get the piston seal out from the groove that is in the caliper bore. Take out the caliper bleeder screw and dispose off the insulators and all the rubber sections and wash the other parts of the brake system using brake system cleaner and blow them using compressed air. Inspect the piston for bad areas and the caliper bore, light polishing is allowable in order to eliminate the corrosion. Clean the piston bore and install the new seal lubing it and the piston bore with clean brake fluid, positioning the seal in the groove and installing a new boot with the flange facing up. Place the piston directly into the caliper bore, gently push it down until it bottoms, then set the dust boot and use a dowel on the other end to push the boot down in to place. Ensure that the bleeder screw is tightly fitted, and new insulators fitted in the caliper ears with silicone grease should be fitted and the caliper locating pins inserted into the insulators. Screw the brake pads into the caliper; mount the caliper onto the brake disc; hand-thread the caliper pins and then tighten them up to the required torque. Replace and tighten the brake hose and inlet fitting bolt with new copper washers if the hose has been removed and bleed the brakes if required. Lastly, fit the wheels, some vehicles will lower automatically, and then snap on the lugs securely, and pump the brake pedal several times gently in order to make the pad to grip the disc, be careful when checking the brake function before the car is set into operation.
