The air filter box for 2007 and earlier models cannot be cleaned and must be replaced if dirty. The location of the air filter box varies depending on the model year, with 2002 and earlier models having it in the engine compartment and 2003-2007 models having it in the left fenderwell. The air filter and housing may be replaced as a unit on some models. To remove the air filter box, the air intake duct must be disconnected from the mass airflow sensor and the wiring must be disconnected from the airflow sensor. The breather hose leading to the valve cover must also be disconnected. The cover is then removed by unscrewing the four screws securing it to the air filter box, allowing access to the filter element. The air filter box base can be lifted to release it from the rubber grommets, which should be checked for deterioration and replaced if necessary. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring that the base pegs are fully seated in the rubber grommets and the mass airflow sensor is correctly located. For 2008 and later models, the MAF sensor wiring is disconnected from the air filter housing and the air outlet tube is detached. The air filter box is then lifted out by removing the mounting bolts. To remove the air intake duct between the mass airflow sensor and throttle housing, the retaining clips at either end must be loosened and the duct carefully eased off. The air intake duct attached to the air filter box base can be removed by first removing the air filter box and then prying up the two clips securing the duct to the engine compartment front panel. The two halves of the duct can be separated at the sleeve joint next to the battery, with the rear half being clipped into the engine left-hand mounting bracket. Replacement is the reverse of removal.
