    Q:
How to remove, inspect, and install the steering column on Ford Focus? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before removing the steering column, pull the negative terminal of the battery out. After that, disconnect the steering and the airbag sliding contact. Four bolts hold the trim that is located beneath the steering column; remove those bolts and pull out the retaining clip to disconnect the trim. Also, remove the multi-plug of the trim panel. If it is applicable then remove the connection of the hood release cable and the electrical connector from the diagnostic plug. Both of them can be removed by using a thin-bladed screwdriver and the upper shroud can be lowered by using a steering column locking lever. Where possible use the screwdriver to unbolt the radio control switch, and pull out the wiring connector. Take off the lower shroud by unscrewing three screws located at the lower part of the assembly and which hold it to the steering column. Take off the electrical connectors on both the input and the output side of the steering column switches and, in case they exist, the anti-theft-system-transceiver. For vehicles with Traction Control, remove the are generally two connectors connected in a series from the steering wheel rotation sensor. Release the locating clips to disconnect the wiring harness from the steering column and then the sleeve where the lower part of the steering column is fixed with a bolt to the steering rack. Pull out the three socket head screws on the upper attachment points of the steering column, and take out the Torx screw of the lower point; to release the column from the sleeve, pull it up and remove it from the car. For touch, with the steering lock removed, touch in various directions for loose bearing, worn out joint play, and loose fasteners around the steering column. Loosen the height adjustment lever mechanism for the possibility of wear and damages and check for the possibility of damages and distortions of the universal joints and shafts and replace the column with a new one in case of damage. As for installation, just do the reverse of the removal procedures but make sure that the wheels are pointed straight ahead and tighten the mounting bracket lock nut, use a new pinch bolt for the sleeve and tighten the bolts to the recommended torque. So if the electronic stability program warning light comes on after the retrofit, reprogramming again at a dealershop with the right tools will again be necessary.
