The catalytic converter is an emission control device installed in the exhaust system that reduces pollutants from the exhaust gas stream. There are two types of converters: the oxidation catalyst and the reduction catalyst. The oxidation catalyst reduces hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) by adding oxygen to produce water vapor (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The reduction catalyst lowers the levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) by removing oxygen to produce nitrogen (N) and oxygen. These two types are combined into a three-way catalyst that reduces all three pollutants.
