The crankshaft can be removed only once the engine has been extracted from a car, if and if flywheel/crankshaft pulley/balancer, timing chains, oil pan, oil pump body/tray, oil filler and piston/connecting rod assemblies have been removed. Before removal, it is necessary to determine its end play which is done with the help of the dial indicator placed on the crankshaft. With the indicator on zero at the rear, pry the crankshaft to the front and check the reading that should be between 0.003 and 0.010 inches. If you do not have a dial indicator then the use of feeler gauges could be used to measure clearance. Turn the main bearing bolts to a stage when they can be removed by hand and in case of the diesel engine, all bolts holding the lower crankcase should be removed. Using a soft mallet, turn the main bearing caps anticlockwise to free them and then slowly lift out the crankshaft because of its weight it should be operated with an assistant. While installing the product, make sure the engine block as well as crankshaft is cleaned and checked. Align the block in a manner that the bottom is up, unscrew the main bearing caps and clean the bearing surface. Put in new upper main bearing inserts and make certain that the oil holes are lined up properly, also place the lower inserts in the caps. Make sure you check the main bearing oil clearance with Plastigage and should be within a limited range. If clearance is unlhelm acceptable, then confirm cleanliness and if bearings vary in size, then consider the bearing size. Crankshaft together with bearing surfaces should be cleaned and then its surfaces coated with thin layer of oil before refitting of the crankshaft is effected. For gasoline engines, while putting the main bearing caps in place, support the bearing inserts and then torq ue the bolts in a certain pattern. For diesel engines, since they develop more power full use main bearings should be fitted as well as crankcase seals while longer bolts must be located properly. Last of all, re-measure crankshaft end play and just to make sure it does not bind on the main bearings, rotate the crankshaft and then put in the new rear main oil seal.
