The time for wheel cylinder replacement is usually indicated by fluid leakage or sticky operation. New wheel cylinders are not very expensive at your local auto parts store, and their purchase makes more sense than trying to rebuild one at home. Always replace both rear wheel cylinders at the same time, never just one side. To remove, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Remove the brake shoe assembly. Remove all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the brake line. To remove the wheel cylinder, disconnect the brake line fitting (A) and remove the two mounting bolts.Don't pull the brake line away from the wheel cylinder. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts. Detach the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate and immediately plug the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. For installation, place the wheel cylinder in position, install the mounting bolts and tighten them. Connect the brake line and install the brake shoe assembly. Finally, bleed the brakes.
