1. Compress the springs with a valve spring compressor. 2. Carefully install the keepers in the upper groove. 3. Slowly release the compressor and make sure the keepers seat properly. 4. Apply a small dab of grease to each keeper to hold it in place if necessary.

Apply silicone sealant to the mating surfaces, then install the intake manifold gasket and apply silicone sealant to the gasket at the same locations.

Remove the cylinder head bolts, following the reverse of the tightening sequence, and loosen the bolts in sequence 1/4-turn at a time.

32. Pull up the slack chain and insert the camshaft sprocket, align it with the camshaft, and install the sprocket bolt. 33. Install the camshaft chain tensioning tool into the chain tensioner location on the left cylinder head. 34. Make sure the engine is located at the correct position for cylinder number 1 at TDC. 35. Clamp the special crankshaft holding tool over the crankshaft damper. 36. Install the camshaft holding tool on the rear of the left camshaft. 37. Remove the tensioning tool from the left cylinder head and install the hydraulic tensioner. 38. Install the camshaft holding tool onto the front of the right camshaft. 39. Remove the chain tensioning tool and install the hydraulic tensioner.

Lay a shop cloth over the lifters and other exposed engine areas.

Any damaged or excessively worn parts must be replaced with new ones.

Repeat the procedure for the remaining valves. Be sure to return the components to their original locations - don't mix them up!

They must be perfectly clean. Use a hard plastic or wood scraper to remove all traces of gasket and carbon, and also clean the piston crowns.

Lift the cylinder head off the engine. If it's difficult to remove, carefully pry it off. Pry against a casting protrusion, not against gasket surfaces.

Remove the timing belt tensioner bolts and the timing belt tensioner spring stop from the cylinder head.

Decarbonizing chemicals are caustic and should be used with caution. It is important to follow the instructions on the container.

Install a new head gasket on the cylinder block, ensuring the correct side faces up.

Drain the cooling system, including removing the engine block drain plugs.

Remove the timing belt tensioner spring stop from the cylinder head.

Remove the alternator and its bracket as an assembly.

A valve spring should never sit directly against an aluminum cylinder head.

Clean all the valve springs, spring seats, stem locks, and retainers with solvent and dry them thoroughly. Work the components from one valve at a time to avoid mixing up the parts.

The harness is secured to the plastic retainer with tape. Unwrap or cut the tape to detach the harness from the retainer.

Carefully release the valve spring compressor and remove the retainer, sleeve (if used), the spring, and the spring seat (if used).

Change the engine oil and filter, then start the engine and check carefully for oil and coolant leaks.
