The head bolts are torque-to-yield type and cannot be reused; a set of NEW head bolts must be obtained.

If only one cylinder head requires removal, disregard the steps for the other cylinder head. For the rear cylinder head, you only need to remove the timing chain, camshafts, and rocker arms from the rear cylinder head; the front can remain installed. If the front cylinder head must be removed, you must first remove the rear timing chain for access to the front chain, while the rear camshafts and rocker arms can remain installed.

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. 2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. 3. Drain the cooling system. 4. Remove the upper and lower intake manifolds. 5. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan. 6. Remove the engine front cover. 7. Remove the timing chains, camshafts, rocker arms, and lash adjusters as necessary. 8. Remove the exhaust manifold(s). 9. Remove the water pump and the water pump housing from the left bank (front) cylinder head. 10. For 2009 or later models, remove the upper radiator support brackets. On all models, remove the oil dipstick and its tube. 11. Disconnect the EGA valve pipe that connects the EGA valve to the rear exhaust manifold. 12. Remove hoses and electrical connectors from the coolant bypass tube, then remove the coolant bypass tube.

Remove the intake duct from the air filter housing.
