In order to remove the head bolts, use of a Torx bit is recommended as use of Allen wrench may lead into rounding up the bolt head. This should be done by removing the negative terminal of the battery and, then bleed the cooling system. What follows shall be the withdrawal of the valve covers, rocker arms, push rods, intake manifold, and the drive belt. If this has not yet been accomplished, loosen the air conditioning compressor from the engine while leaving the refrigerant lines connected and then take off the compressor mounting bracket on 1997 and after models. Remove the power steering pump and bracket without removing the hoses and then untape or cut the wiring harness at the back of head where it has been encased with a plastic retainer. Move to the exhaust collecting manifolds to eliminate them then go to uninstall the alternator of the ignition coil pack and the spark plugs. The cylinder head bolts need to be removed and discarded using a T55 Torx bit, new bolts have to be bought and the bolt has to be done in stages before lifting the cylinder head off the engine and if needed prying it. For installation the removal of all traces of the gasket material is necessary, all parts should be cleaned with solvent then using a tap to clean up the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes. Ensure all bolt holes and cylinder bores are free from any foreign material and place the gaskets over dowel pin with out any sealant such that the FRONT top is correctly aligned. Place the cylinder heads and new bolts with an intention of tightening them with hands at first. Spray the sealer and put the intake manifold in place and fasten the manifold bolts/nuts by hand. When tightening it is advised to tighten the cylinder head bolts in a sequence then the intake manifold bolts until the maximum recommended torque is achieved to ensure that the parts are properly aligned and that the gasket does not fail. The rest of the installation is the mirror image of the removal and the final step is to floor it to ensure all the oil, coolant and vacuum leaks are present.

New cylinder head bolts must be used for reassembly. Failure to use new bolts may result in cylinder head gasket leakage and engine damage. 15. The mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and engine block must be perfectly clean when the cylinder heads are installed. Use a gasket scraper to remove all traces of carbon and old gasket material, then clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. If there's oil on the mating surfaces when the cylinder heads are installed, the gaskets may not seal correctly and leaks may develop. Cover the open areas of the engine with shop rags to keep debris out during repair and reassembly. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any debris that falls into the cylinders. Do not use abrasive wheels or sharp metal scrapers on the heads or block surface; use a plastic scraper and chemical gasket remover, or the head gasket surfaces could develop leaks. 16. Check the engine block and cylinder head mating surfaces for nicks, deep scratches, and other damage. 17. Use a tap of the correct size to chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes. Dirt, corrosion, sealant, and damaged threads will affect torque readings. 18. Make sure the new gaskets are installed on the correct cylinder banks (Identify the left and right cylinder head gaskets; the shapes are different and cannot be interchanged). 19. Position the new gasket(s) over the alignment dowels in the engine block. 20. Carefully position the cylinder heads on the engine block without disturbing the gaskets. Install the NEW cylinder head bolts (the cylinder head bolts are torque-to-yield design and they cannot be reused). Following the recommended sequence, tighten the cylinder head bolts in five steps, to the torque and angle of rotation. Note: The method used for the cylinder head bolt tightening procedure is referred to as "torque-angle" or "torque-to-yield" method. Follow the procedure exactly. Tighten the bolts in the first step using a torque wrench, then use a breaker bar and a special torque-angle gauge to tighten the bolts the required angle. If the adapter is not available, mark each bolt with a paint stripe to aid in the torque angle process. 21. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal. 22. Install the engine. 23. Change the engine oil and filter and refill the cooling system, then start the engine and check carefully for oil and coolant leaks.

Lubricate the new replacement cylinder head bolts with clean engine oil before placing them in position.

Detach the air conditioning compressor from the engine and place it out of the way. Caution: DO NOT disconnect any refrigerant lines! Detach the power steering pump and bracket and set them out of the way. Don't disconnect the power steering hoses.

Check the block and head mating surfaces for nicks, deep scratches, and other damage. If damage is slight, it can be removed with a file; if excessive, machining may be necessary.

Remove the intake manifold.

The engine must be completely cool when the heads are removed. Failure to allow the engine to cool off could result in head warpage.

Repeat the procedure for the remaining valves. Be sure to return the components to their original locations - don't mix them up!

Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts using a T55 Torx bit. Do not use an Allen wrench as it may round out the bolt heads. The bolts must be replaced with new ones whenever they are removed, and they should be loosened in several stages.

Clean all the valve springs, spring seats, keepers, and retainers with solvent and dry them thoroughly. Do the components from one valve at a time to avoid mixing up the parts.

Remove the ignition coil bracket, dipstick tube, alternator and its mounting bracket, ground strap, throttle cable bracket, exhaust manifold(s), and valve cover(s).

Warpage can be checked using a straightedge and feeler gauge to see if the gauge can slip under the straightedge on the head gasket mating surface. If warpage exceeds the limit, resurfacing may be necessary.

The engine must be completely cool when the heads are removed. Failure to allow the engine to cool off could result in head war-page.

Take particular care as aluminum alloy is easily damaged. Ensure that carbon does not enter the oil and water passages, especially the lubrication system.

1. Compress the springs with a valve spring compressor. 2. Carefully install the keepers in the upper groove. 3. Slowly release the compressor and make sure the keepers seat properly. 4. Apply a small dab of grease to each keeper to hold it in place if necessary.

Loosen the rocker arms and remove pushrods.

Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in 1/4-turn increments until they can be removed by hand. Store the bolts in the cardboard holder as they're removed to ensure they are reinstalled in their original locations.

Remove the upper intake manifold and label and disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors. Then, remove the lower intake manifold.

Run an appropriate-size tap into each of the threaded holes to remove corrosion and thread sealant that may be present. If compressed air is available, use it to clear the holes of debris produced by this operation. Wear eye protection when using compressed air.

A valve spring should never sit directly against an aluminum cylinder head.

Discard the cylinder head bolts.

Use a valve spring compressor to compress the spring, then remove the valve stem locks from the valve stem with needle-nose pliers or a magnet.
