The cylinder heads should not be removed until the engine has cooled, or warpage of components will occur. First, remove the battery cable negative terminal, and eliminate the valve covers, pushrods, and rocker arms. After that, remove the upper intake plenum and lower intake manifold as well as loosening the exhaust manifold of the head scheduled for removal. For the left cylinder head, remove the power steering reservoir with the hoses still connected, and the drivebelts, and the air-conditioning compressor/power- steering pump bracket. For the right cylinder head, unplug the alterner wiring and remove the bolts but keep the alterner bracket on if possible. The cylinder head bolts should be loosened at intervals of two clockwise, and untightened in counter clockwise sequence to ease their total removal; the old bolts are discarded and it is also important to remove wire harness bolts at back heads of the head. Remove the cylinder heads gently off the engine by putting a piece of wooden block under it and apply a hammer gently if required, and then place the cylinder heads on wooden blocks so that there is no further damage. Make sure the mating surfaces on the cylinder heads and engine block are free of contaminants before assembly, you provide gasket scraper and solvent to clean them. One should look for signs of damage on the surfaces and use a tap to remove debris in the bolt holes. Align the new gasket and place it over the dowel pins; subsequently, install the cylinder heads over the engine block without shifting the gasket. Treat the threads of new cylinder head bolts with a little oil before fitting them, then tighten them only with your fingers until they are firm and using the correct torque sequence without removing them all at one time. The rest of installation procedure is executed oppositely to the removal process, after the installation is completed change the engine oil and filter before start the engine and check the leaks.

Push the valve back into the head and deburr the area around the keeper groove with a fine file or whetstone.

Check the installed valve spring height with a ruler graduated in 1/32-inch increments or a dial caliper. If the head was sent out for service work, the installed height should be correct, but don't automatically assume that it is. The measurement is taken from the top of each spring seat or shim(s) to the bottom of the retainer.

Use the required camshaft retaining fixtures to lock the camshafts and leave the tools in place.

Clean all parts thoroughly, ensuring all oil passages are open, and check the rocker arm faces for wear and damage.

The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal, and then change the engine oil and filter before starting the engine and checking for leaks.

The head should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected, and if a complete engine overhaul is being done, finish the engine disassembly procedures before starting the cylinder head cleaning and inspection process.

If the inspection indicates that the valve components are in generally poor condition and worn beyond specified limits, reassemble the valves in the cylinder head.

The valve covers, pushrods, rocker arms, upper intake plenum, lower intake manifold, and exhaust manifold must be removed.

On all engines, lubricate and install the valves, then install new seals on each of the valve guides. Using a hammer and deep socket, gently tap each seal into place until it's seated on the guide. On V6 models, use a hammer and a seal installer to drive the seal onto the valve guide/head casting boss, ensuring the valve spring seat is in place first. Don't twist or cock the seals during installation or they will not seat properly on the valve stems.

Remove the drivebelt idler pulley from the bracket.

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. 2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. 3. Drain the cooling system. 4. Remove the valve covers. 5. Remove the intake manifold. 6. Remove the engine from the vehicle. 7. Remove the exhaust manifolds. 8. Remove the timing chains, tensioners, and sprockets. 9. Remove the camshafts.

Remove the drivebelt and the drivebelt tensioner.
