Ford F3TZ-6049-C Cylinder Head Assembly

Confirm that all camshaft and crankshaft marks are still aligned.

Be sure all bolt and bolt hole threads are clean, dry, and in good condition.

Lubricate them with clean engine oil, then place them in position.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. 2. Drain the cooling system. 3. Remove the engine from the vehicle and mount it on an engine stand. 4. Remove the intake manifold. 5. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors. 6. Remove the exhaust manifolds. 7. Remove the drivebelt and the drivebelt tensioner. 8. Remove the rocker arms and valve lash adjusters.

Lift the cylinder head off the engine. If it's difficult to remove, carefully pry it off. Pry against a casting protrusion, not against gasket surfaces.

Any damaged or excessively worn parts must be replaced with new ones.

Lift the cylinder head(s) off the engine without prying between the cylinder head and engine block. Use a wood block and hammer to dislodge if necessary.

Cylinder head disassembly involves the removal of the intake and exhaust valves and related components.

Remove the spark plugs.

Remove the camshaft and crankshaft holding tools.

Avoid twisting or cocking the seals during installation, as they will not seat properly on the valve stems.

1. Compress the springs with a valve spring compressor. 2. Carefully install the keepers in the upper groove. 3. Slowly release the compressor and make sure the keepers seat properly. 4. Apply a small dab of grease to each keeper to hold it in place if necessary.

Scrape all traces of old gasket material and sealing compound off the head gasket, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold sealing surfaces. Be very careful not to gouge the cylinder head.
