This procedure is specific to 1982 through 1987 Continentals and 1984 through 1992 Mark Vlls. To begin, loosen the wheel lug nuts and block the rear wheels while setting the parking brake. Then, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the front wheel. Next, hold the tie-rod end with a wrench and loosen the jam nut enough to mark the position of the tie-rod end in relation to the threads using white paint. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut on the tie-rod end stud. Use a two-jaw puller to disconnect the tie-rod from the steering knuckle arm, ensuring that the nut is loosened but not removed to prevent any sudden movements. Remove the nut and separate the tie-rod. If the tie-rod end is difficult to unscrew, clamp a pair of locking pliers to the serrated area of the tie-rod and use a wrench to remove it. To install, thread the tie-rod end back onto the marked position and insert the tie-rod stud into the spindle arm. Tighten the jam nut securely. Install a new nut on the stud and tighten it to the specified torque, then secure it with a new cotter pin. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. It is recommended to have the alignment checked by a dealer service department or an alignment shop.
