Reinstall the drivebelt, put back the fan/clutch assembly and shroud, start the engine, and check for leaks.

Carefully remove the seal with a screwdriver or seal removal tool, being cautious not to damage the cover or nick the crankshaft.

For a one-piece seal, remove the transmission, detach the driveplate and rear cover plate, pry out the old seal, clean the crankshaft and seal bore, apply oil and grease to the new seal, and press it into the bore. Reinstall the components.

Place a 1/16-inch wide bead of anaerobic sealant on either the engine block or the seal retainer.

Drive the seal into the bore with a large socket and hammer until it's completely seated. Select a socket that's the same outside diameter as the seal (a section of pipe can be used if a socket isn't available).

Place a small bead (1.5mm wide) of RTV sealant on either the engine block or the seal retainer.

Position the new seal in the bore with the open end of the seal facing IN. A small amount of oil or grease applied to the outer edge of the new seal will make installation easier.

The old seal can be removed by prying it out with a screwdriver. Be very careful not to damage the crankshaft or the seal bore. Note how far it is recessed into the bore before removing it; the new seal will have to be recessed an equal amount.

Unbolt and remove the pulley, marking the pulley and vibration damper before removing the four bolts. Use a six-point socket and a breaker bar to loosen the large vibration damper bolt in the center.

Clean the crankshaft and seal bore with lacquer thinner or acetone and check the seal contact surface for scratches or nicks.

Remove all traces of RTV sealant and apply a 3/16-inch bead of RTV where the block and oil pan flanges meet.

Use a seal puller to pry out the oil seal, being careful not to damage the crankshaft or the bore.

The first step is to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Unbolt and remove the crankshaft pulley. First, remove the bolt from the front of the crankshaft, then use a puller to detach the crankshaft pulley.

1. Remove the engine front cover. 2. Use a punch or screwdriver and hammer to drive the seal out of the cover from the back side, supporting the cover with blocks of wood. 3. Clean the bore to remove any old seal material and corrosion, then position the new seal in the bore with the open end facing IN. 4. Drive the new seal into the bore until it's completely seated. 5. Reinstall the engine front cover and crankshaft pulley. 6. Start the engine and check for leaks.
