How to remove and reassemble the Brake Disc and Wheel Hub on Ford Fairmont? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the caliper and anchor plate assembly. If the caliper and anchor plate are not needing attention, there is no need to disconnect the flexible brake hose from the caliper. Suspend the assembly with string or wire from the upper suspension arm. Carefully remove the grease cap from the wheel spindle using pliers. Withdraw the cotter pin and nut lock from the wheel bearing adjusting nut. Undo and remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut from the spindle. Grip the hub and disc assembly and pull it outwards to loosen the washer and outer wheel bearing. Push the hub and disc back onto the spindle and remove the washer and outer wheel bearing from the spindle. Grip the hub and disc assembly and pull it from the wheel spindle. Carefully pry out the grease seal and lift away the inner tapered bearing from the back of the hub assembly. Clean out the hub and wash the bearings with solvent, ensuring no grease or oil gets onto the brake disc. Clean any grease from the rotor with denatured alcohol or brake cleaner. Thoroughly clean the disc and inspect for deep scoring or excessive corrosion. If necessary, reground the disc, but ensure the minimum thickness is not less than specified. Ideally, install a new disc and clean it to remove the protective coating. To reassemble, grease the bearings and fully pack the bearing cages and rollers. Fit the inner bearing and tap the grease seal back into the hub, ensuring the lip faces inward. Replace the hub and disc assembly onto the spindle, keeping it centered to avoid damage. Place the outer wheel bearing and flat washer on the spindle. Screw the wheel bearing adjusting nut onto the spindle as instructed. Detach the caliper from the upper suspension arm and guide the assembly towards the disc, being careful not to stretch or twist the brake flexible hose. Start by sliding the caliper assembly onto the disc at the lower part and continue installing the assembly.

    Q:
How to remove and install Brake Disc on Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is made of several steps that are applicable on front and rear disc brake assemblies. First, remove the wheel lug nuts, then jack up the vehicle, and place it on jackstands prior to removing the particular wheel. Subsequently, unbolt the brake caliper, leaving the brake fluid line connected, then hang it aside with some wire, so that the brake fluid hose is not strained. If inspecting the rear disc, the technician must insert two lugs nuts so as to lock the disc against the axle flange. The disc surface should be examined to find if there are score marks; light scratches and shallow are normal but deep score mark more than 0.015 in (0.38 mm) then the disc must be removed and refinished. Look at both sides of the disc and if pulsating occurred during brake, then the problem is on disc runout. To check runout, place a dial indicator at approximately one half inch from the outside edge of the disc and set the indicator zero while rotating the disc and be certain the reading registered on the indicator exceeds the allowable limit, the disc will need refinishing. One should commendably reconstruct brake discs to do away with the brake pedal pulsations, while if reconstruction was not done, one ought to pad and deglaze the surface of brake pads using mediums emery cloth with swirling movements. It is unlawful to machine the disc below the minimum refinish thickness, which is embedded inside the disc and should not be mistaken for the minimum wear thickness Use a micrometer to determine the thickness of the disc at different positions from the outer rim. The only time you will remove the rear disc is when replacing it; this requires you to unscrew the two lug nuts that were used to hold the disc to the axle during inspection and then pull the disc off the flange of the axle. As for installation, then, place the disc and hub assembly, and adjust the wheel bearing for the front discs in addition to arranging the caliper together with the brake pad assembly over the disc while tightening the caliper bolts to the correct torque. Last, fix the wheel, drop the car and press the brake few time to feel and see that brake pad is touching the rotor and to test the operation of the break before putting the car back in service.
