    Q:
How to remove and install the hub and bearing assembly on 1993-2011 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
For 1998 through 2000 models equipped with pulse vacuum hub locks, the hub and bearing assembly is a sealed unit and cannot be adjusted or serviced; if it is bad, it must be replaced. Any operation on the hub included the removal and installation of the hub lock and the hub and bearing assembly needs special tools. Initially, you should free the front wheel lug nuts, lift the car and set it on jackstands with caution before you remove the wheel. Subsequently, unbolt the brake caliper and disc, then fix the hub-lock removal clips and puller in a manner that it fits into the hub lock slots to de-lodge the hub lock assembly. Take out the brake disc splash shield, pull off the driveaxle retainer ring and sever the vacuum line clips. For models with ABS, the ABS wire harness has to be disconnected and the sensor removed. Removal of the hub assembly from the steering knuckle must be done by unbolting it and tapping it to set free from the driveaxle and then pulling off it, while covering the axle end to avoid any further damage. To disassemble the hub and bearing assembly a needle bearing puller and slide hammer is used; O-rings and thrust washers need to be discarded and replaced with new ones as old ones may lead to vacuum energy leaks. Check and verify the assembly with particular emphasis on the bearing preload nut, which should not be shifted. For reassembly, fit the caged needle bearing and apply the lubrication so that it is appropriately fitted with the thrust washer. While installing tighten the bolts, at the same time examine and if possible replace main seal, put up the hub and bearing assembly. Lastly reconnect the vacuum line and the ABS harness if any in proper manner, and look for vacuum leaks. Aluminium wheels are standard on the production systems of the 2000 onwards models without pulse vacuum hub locks; the sealed wheel bearings are also non-repairable and require replacement if they're damaged. The removal procedure also has the same steps such as the loosening of the lug nuts, the removal of the wheel, brake components and the driveaxle/hub nut and the separation of the hub from the steering knuckle. Rather, installation is the procedure of tightening all the components to the required torque on the equipment.

    Q:
What is the procedure for checking for vacuum leaks before reconnecting the vacuum line for the 2010 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Hook up a hand-operated vacuum pump/gauge to the wheel-end of the vacuum line and apply 15 in-Hg of vacuum. The line must not leak more than 0.50 in-Hg in 30 seconds.
