    Q:
What precautions should be taken when working with the airbag system and removing the instrument panel on Lincoln MKX? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remember always to switch off airbag system before working on any component of the airbag system to avoid triggering the airbag and this may cause an injury on the person. This procedure can be slightly provocative because of hidden screws, complicated angles and positions, as well as countless electrical connectors that have to be marked and disconnected. This is a job that is better left for those who are more experienced in do it your self jobs. While carrying out this procedure note down the assembly and manner of installation of every part that is part of the instrument panel so that you can easily reconnect all of them when you are done. The battery of 2015 and later models should be discharged by a licensed technician and the cooling system should be drained. Start with the removal of steering wheel, dashboard trim panel, glove box, air conditioning and heater control assembly, instrument cluster, right lower instrument panel insulator and front seats as it will be easier for the implementation. Remove both the heater inlet and outlet hoses and AC hoses, and beside remove left and right A pillar trim as well as front door sill trim. Some of the tasks to perform include; the removal of the left kick panel by disconnecting electrical connectors in the left kick panel area as well as removal of cowl panels and then disconnecting every electrical connector of the air conditioning system in the glove box area. For 2015 and later models please remove the top instrument panel defrost panel, pull the electrical connectors loose and release harness clips between the front seats, before indicating the position of upper and lower steering column shafts and removing the pinch bolt. Hood release handle screws have to be unbolted and if equipped with aspirator hose, aspirator hose has to be disconnected, shift lever cable has to be detached, center console has to be unbolted and disconnected electric connections too. Pull the carpet back, remove the electrical connector of the Restraints Control Module, and also the bolts and brace nuts that fasten the instrument panel to the floor. Remove the left side instrument panel Torx head bolt from inside the driver's door opening; also remove the left and right side; have an assistant lending his support to the instrument panel. Reinstallation is done in the exact process that is the reverse of removal, and the A-pillar trim panels are fastened with tethers and clips.
